Lisbon… Day 1
Lisbon had been on my radar for a while - a city of yellow trams, patterned tiles, and golden sunlight. But this trip was extra special: it was my partner’s first holiday abroad with me, and also my 30th birthday celebration. The plan? Explore, relax, discover hidden gems, and make memories together.
Our journey started the night before at Hotel Ibis near Luton Airport. Unfortunately, dinner was disappointing and sleep was almost non-existent, so by morning, we were more than ready to get going. At the airport, we treated ourselves to a full English breakfast at Big Smoke Taphouse & Kitchen. For my partner, it was the first time in years that he had navigated an airport, so I gave him the “grand tour” while we waited to board.
One ticket to Lisbon…
One very nervous first-time flyer clutching my arm the entire way up…
But once we were in the air, things calmed down. A Harry Potter podcast kept him occupied mid-flight, and before long, we were descending into sunny Portugal.
STOP 1 – The Train Ride into Lisbon 🚆
We skipped the taxi and chose the train from the airport instead—faster and cheaper. Lisbon’s train system turned out to be one of the easiest I’ve ever used.
The moment we stepped outside the station, the heat hit us. Straight away: sun cream for my partner, who burns faster than you’d believe! On the short walk to the hotel, we passed a huge shopping market and spotted a few restaurants to try later in the week.
STOP 2 – Hotel Check-In 🏨
Finding the hotel wasn’t simple—it was tucked away, hidden between lively restaurants. But once inside, we were greeted by the unforgettable Jorge at reception. He welcomed us with drinks, chatted away enthusiastically, and shared endless recommendations: restaurants, viewpoints, shopping streets, and hidden gems. His energy was so contagious, I thought he might pass out from talking without pause—but he was brilliant.
Our room was located on the top floor (accessible by elevator to the 4th floor, then stairs to the 5th). When we opened the door—WOW. Bright, spacious, and the perfect place to cool off. After messaging family and unpacking a little, we set the air conditioner to full blast and headed back out.
STOP 3 – First Dinner in Lisbon 🍴
That evening, we explored the neighbourhood and passed a world-famous steakhouse—apparently ranked the 83rd best steak restaurant in the world, with steaks costing up to €900! Impressive, but definitely not for us this trip.
Instead, we stumbled across a charming corner restaurant, Café Janis, where we shared a few dishes. The atmosphere was relaxed, the food delicious, and it felt like the perfect, low-key first-night dinner.
⭐ Rating: 4/5 — Cosy atmosphere, good food, lovely start to the holiday.
STOP 4 – Evening Stroll 🌙
On the walk back, we chose a different route to explore more of the area. The streets were calm and warm, with locals dining outdoors and the city buzzing gently into the evening. Back at the hotel, we rested and began planning what to do on the unbooked days ahead.
Tomorrow’s Adventure 🐠
Day 2 takes us to the Lisbon Oceanarium - perfect timing as the forecast predicts a sweltering 37–40°C. A cooler indoor escape while still discovering something new!
